The stats tell it all: The number one cause of death in the United States is heart disease. That’s right, more than any other disease – even cancer (a close second) – heart disease is the most likely to kill you. The United States is currently facing a “diabesity” epidemic, or a substantial increase in the prevalence of metabolic syndrome leading to diabetes and obesity, all serious risk factors for heart disease.

According to the American Heart Association, every 34 seconds someone in the US dies of a heart attack. By the time you finish reading this paragraph, another person will have lost their life. Sadly, many people do not even know they have heart disease until they experience a heart attack. These facts alone make Heart Health a critical topic to understand.

The gut-skin connection is very significant. Inflammatory processes present in the gut may manifest on the skin. Toxins are expelled with sweat, and can cause the skin to react. Like the inside of the digestive tract, the skin is covered in microbes which can be neutral, protective or pathogenic. Skin reaction may reflect what is going on inside the body. Therefore treating skin conditions only from the outside will often be ineffective and lead to other chronic issues.

  • Brain Health
    • Brain Health

The gut-brain connection occurs in two directions—from the brain to the gut, and from the gut to the brain. When a person has a “gut feeling,” or an emotional upset causes a stomachache or loss of appetite, they experience examples of the first, most familiar direction. When the gut is out of balance, inflammation results leading to a condition commonly known as leaky gut. A leaky gut will allow undigested food particles and toxins to enter into the bloodstream. Some may cross into the brain, setting the stage for diseases like Alzheimers and dementia. Recognizing the underlying contributing factors that created the gut imbalance in the first place is the first step to achieving optimal brain function .

Healthy pH levels, whether in the colon or systemic, are found when you eat a high-fiber diet, high in vegetables and fruits, healthy proteins, and healthy fats. Complement this with foods and supplements high in beneficial bacteria, omega-3 fatty acids, and digestive enzymes, and you will be supporting optimal health (which begins in the digestive system).

Energize, Power Up! through Breath and Movement

Energize woman with dog-brendawatson.com

Today I’d like to focus on the second E in the RENEW Total Body Detox program as you Energize your entire body – and by that I mean your immune system as well as your mind and spirit. Listen closely – I don’t encourage you to add new movement programs into your schedule until you have developed your stable routine around food choices.

It’s important to understand that a functional lymphatic system is a critical aspect of detoxification. You’ll recall that lymph is the clear fluid filled with immune cells that moves around the body in a series of vessels, delivering nutrients and collecting cellular waste while helping to destroy pathogens. Both breathing and movement serve to powerfully stimulate lymph flow and immune function.

The Magic of Deep Breathing

The mere act of breathing in and out encourages lymph circulation through the body. The deeper you breathe, the more you can achieve this effect. It has long been known that exercise stimulates this movement of lymphatic fluid, but the role of breathing wasn’t entirely recognized until technology provided the means to photograph lymph flow. This direct observation shows that deep breathing causes the lymph to shoot through the capillaries like a geyser. Therefore, you can think of the breath as the pump for stimulation of lymph flow.

Our daily lives are stressful and most of us are shallow breathers, which means we just breathe in our upper chest, and don’t fill the diaphragm, rib cage and intestinal area regularly with oxygen. So here is a good breathing exercise you can do anywhere, at any time.

Simple breath to free stress – and Energize~

As you inhale, count to 7 and allow your ribcage and abdomen to expand. Then hold that breath for a count of 7. Finally slowly exhale to the count of 7. Try it and let me know if you feel the same stress relief that I notice whenever I remember to do this simple process.

The Magic of Movement

Movement of your body squeezes lymph nodes, which are concentrated in the neck, underarms, groin and behind the knees, helping to pump toxins out of the body.

Slow movement exercises, such as yoga and tail chi can be enjoyed by people of all ages and fitness levels. Yoga, which I like to do, focuses on both stretching and controlled breathing.

Walking, one of the most accessible forms of exercise is also the perfect starting point for people who are not accustomed to any type of physical activity. As you build up to longer, more rigorous walks you’ll begin to sweat more and unload toxins through your skin.

Whether you’re choosing a 20-30 minute walk after dinner each night, or three 10-minute walks throughout the day, your health benefit will be the same. Leisurely, slow-paced strolls won’t accomplish this if your goal is to Energize.

Your goal in any movement program over time will be increase the workload of your lungs and heart. You’ll notice your heart rate will naturally increase as your breathing comes more quickly (and deeply).

A word of caution here. If you are transitioning from a sedentary lifestyle into one that incorporates regular exercise, please start slowly. Gradually increase the time you engage in your chosen activity and the intensity of your effort. All too often I watch people go too fast and end up tired, strained, and sometimes injured. Before long, they are physically and mentally burned out. They lose interest and soon enough they are back where they started. Please don’t let this be you!

No matter your movement choice, remember to place your attention on your breath, keeping in mind how effective full breathing is to your health. I can’t stress this often enough.

 Awesome benefits of movement!

Check out these 13 inspirational reasons to exercise! You will dramatically support detoxification at many levels, too.

  1. Increased stamina and energy
  2. Increased flexibility
  3. Increased blood circulation
  4. Better sleep
  5. Stress reduction
  6. Increased self-esteem and sense of well-being
  7. Increased oxygen supply to cells and tissues
  8. Increased muscle strength, tone and endurance
  9. Release of brain chemicals called endorphins that act as natural tranquilizers
  10. Increased progesterone and decreased estrogen production in women, potentially easing PMS and cramps
  11. Decreased food cravings
  12. Decreased blood sugar levels
  13. Weight distribution and maintenance

Stretching and Cooling Down

Don’t forget to stretch after any exercise routine (never before). Stretching is important to keep your body limber, but it should not be done without having warmed up your muscles first through other exercises. Stretching will then help your muscles recover faster, prevent tightening, and increase flexibility. Your goal is to comfortably hold each stretch for 30 to 60 seconds.

Endocrine system out of balance? Energize!

No discussion of tools to Energize your body can be complete without recognizing the hormonal system and the impact that has on your overall vitality. Your hormonal system includes many more organs and glands than those I’ll mention here. The complex interaction of your endocrine glands intensely affects you in so many ways including your sleep, your weight, and your overall sense of wellbeing. A full discussion of these systems is out of the scope of this post, but can be found in my recent book, The Road to Perfect Health.

Today’s tips will focus specifically on the adrenal and thyroid glands.

As discussed previously, toxins like fire retardants and perchlorate from dry cleaning can impact the efficiency of these endocrine glands.

According to thyroid.org, more than 12 percent of the U.S. population will develop a thyroid condition during their lifetime. An estimated 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease. Up to 60 percent of those with thyroid disease are unaware of their condition.

Additionally, adrenal fatigue is a surprisingly common affliction, with some experts stating that 80 percent of the Western world can expect to be affected at some point in their lives, as stated by adrenalfatiguefocus.org.

With that in mind, I wanted to offer a few supplement suggestions I have found to be quite effective for most people. Dr. Wilson’s formula’s focus on adrenal support and also supply other solutions as well. Should you feel some thyroid support would be best for you, click here.

Please check back shortly for my next post where I will detail two of my favorite movement exercise programs – rebounding and strength training with exercise bands. Until then – breathe and Energize!

Nourish Your Body Daily With Essential Nutrients

Nourish - green drink - brendawatson.com

Let’s recap where we are in the RENEW Total Body Detox program. You began by Reducing your daily toxin exposure in your home environment. Then you began to Eliminate toxins from inside your body. As this process continues, you’ll want to Nourish your cells with as much good nutrition as you can get from both your regular diet and supplementation. This will help you fortify your immune system so it’s capable of fighting the daily battle against toxins. .

There has been a lot of controversy surrounding nutritional supplementation. Skeptics will say that “you get all the nutrients your body needs from the diet”. I’d like to know what they’re eating, because the average American diet is severely lacking in many of our essential nutrients.

An incredible myth in our culture is that “Your body gets all the nutrients it needs from the Standard American Diet”.

Surveys in North American show that the diets of more than 60% tested are deficient in essential nutrients. As we’ve discussed, especially those nutrients needed to support proper detoxification.

Symptoms of nutritional deficiency are not always obvious. You don’t need to have scurvy to have a vitamin C deficiency. Plainly put, if you don’t equip your body with the nutrients it needs to support its internal structures and functions, it won’t be able to withstand the toxic environment in which you live.

Your vitamins A, C, E, minerals such as selenium and most amino acids are critical to liver health and function. With this said, it is important to take a whole food multi-nutrient formula everyday to supply your body with these valuable nutrients.

As I’ve already mentioned, omega-3 oils, our good fat, is also severely lacking in the American diet. Those good fats are needed not only for proper liver function, but for a healthy cardiovascular system, for nerve and brain function, hormonal balance, proper elimination, a good immune system, and even to promote a positive mood!

That’s why taking a highly concentrated, enteric coated Omega-3 supplement can make a big difference in your health.

Another important player in supporting our health is the good bacteria within our digestive tract. At least 70% of our immune system in our digestive tract and the bacteria is the main wellness-supporting factor. Many factors can affect the balance of this good bacteria, so it’s important to keep the levels high.

Eating foods like plain yogurt, kefir, along with fermented veggies are great additions to the diet that provide good bacteria, however for many it is necessary to regularly take a bacterial supplement called probiotics. Look for one that offers from 50 to 100 billion bacterial cultures per capsule.

We should know by now the benefit of eating raw fruits and veggies, not only for the nutrients, but also for the enzymes they provide. For some of us it is difficult to get the enzymes we need strictly from raw foods. An enzyme supplement with every meal will strongly support efficient digestion. Enzyme supplements will also ensure you absorb more nutrients from your food.

Perhaps my favorite way to Nourish all the cells in my body is through using my high speed blender and making green drinks. I’ve been blending green drinks to consume daily for 10 years now and have noticed a steadily increasing vitality. I want you to know that I actually feel better as the years pass! And I credit blended drinks with a lot of my success.

So without further ado I’d like to share with you right here, right now…

My Favorite Blended Green Drink recipe! Nourish your body daily!

Place the following in order into a Vitamix or equivalent high-speed blender. Makes 1 quart. Be sure to drink within 2 days for maximum nutrient value.

  • 3 stalks chopped celery
  • 1/3 English Cucumber with peel
  • 1/2 lemon with peel
  • 1/2 inch of ginger with peel
  • 1/2 avocado – meat only
  • 3-4 sprigs cilantro
  • 3-4 sprigs parsley
  • 1 handful baby spinach
  • 1 handful chopped kale
  • 3/4 pink lady or gala apple with peel – seeded
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 handful ice

I feel one of the most important aspects of this particular recipe is that it provides approximately 19 grams of fiber per batch! As we’ve discussed, fiber is responsible for helping to rid toxins from your body. With this in mind, I want to strongly suggest that you drink at least a quart of Blended Green Drink daily as you Nourish your body and journey through your RENEW Total Body Detox program.

Please be in touch and let me know how you progress! I’m happy to answer any questions that come up~

More Strategies for Eliminating Toxins Effectively

eliminating toxins with skin brush - brendawatson.com

I’d like to follow up my last post on Eliminating toxins from within your body with some additional (and favorite) strategies to assist you as you continue your RENEW Total Body Detox program. Easy, practical, effective.

Focused Liver Detoxification

This is a completely different type of cleanse program as it is focused on specifically the liver. Liver cleansing can be completed after a Total Body Cleanse, or even as a stand-alone program.

Why do we need to target the liver?

The liver uses a 2-part detoxification process to get toxins (chemicals, prescription drug residue, alcohol, recreational drugs, and even over the counter like ibuprofen, etc) out of the body. In order to do this efficiently the liver needs certain nutrients which most people are not even aware of. While a Total Body Detox at least 2x a year is needed for vibrant health, a specific Liver Detox is extremely important for everyone who lives in our toxic environment today.

Many people do not think they have a liver problem unless they go to the doctor and their liver enzymes are elevated or the doctor does a sonogram and sees a fatty liver. Let me tell you 80% of liver function can be impaired without a single symptom. Yes, 80%!!

So after a Total Body Cleanse completing a specific Liver Detox only enhances your health.

The ideal Liver Detox will supply the necessary nutrients that support the 2-part process of ridding the body of stored toxins in the liver.

These nutrients:

  • Protect the liver from chemical toxins.
  • Provide antioxidant support that becomes depleted due to everyday food choices and environmental stressors.
  • Stimulate the bile to release toxins to the gallbladder.
  • Cleanse the kidneys for safe toxin elimination.
What to look for in a complete Liver Detox Formula

Morning formula:

Alpha Lipoic Acid,  Artichoke, Dandelion, Green Tea, Methionine, Taurine, Milk Thistle, Selenium, and Turmeric

Night formula:

Belleric Myrobalan fruit, Boerhavia Diffusa root, Eclipta Alba root and herb, Andrographis, Piccorhiza.

The Liver Detox formulas do not create colon elimination so remember – regular bowel movements are critical during this program. Also added fiber is necessary to pick up toxins being dumped into the digestive system.

Liver detoxification may be the most overlooked and critical component of a healthy lifestyle in our world today.

Sweating

With the skin being our largest organ of our body, it is a prime participant in elimination of toxins. Because of its size and area, it actually eliminates more cellular waste, through the pores, than the colon and kidney combined. And it does this through sweating.

Some people have told me that they don’t sweat. As a matter of fact they avoid sweating as much as possible! We have gone from a population that is outside and sweating to being inside in a climate-controlled environment as much as possible.

Let me tell you this – if you don’t naturally sweat, you are not detoxifying well. You MUST encourage your body to sweat. Either go outside for activities or use a sauna. Eliminating toxins through sweating is a must!

A sauna will accelerate the removal of toxic metals as well as pesticides and chemicals that are stored in the fatty tissues of the body and are not easily dislodged.

I prefer the infrared sauna. You can actually buy a one-person portable infrared sauna that you can use in the privacy of your home.

Dry Skin Brushing

Another way to further your goal of eliminating toxins already in your body would be to use a dry skin brush before taking your morning shower.

Dry skin brushing increases circulation and helps the immune system function at optimum levels.

Soaks and Baths

Detox soaks and baths at home are both relaxing and cost effective. You’ll want to fill a clean tub with hot filtered water (a shower filter or whole-house filter is recommended). Make the water as hot as you can comfortably tolerate. There are a number of therapeutic substances that can be used in your bathwater.

Epsom salts contains magnesium to relax muscles and sulfur to aid in detoxification and help increase blood supply to the skin. A quarter of a cup of salts is a good start with a gradual increase to as much as two to four pounds per bath.

Ginger root helps the body to sweat, so toxins are drawn to the skin’s surface. To prepare a ginger bath, place half-inch slices of fresh ginger in boiling water over a stove; turn off the heat, and steep for thirty minutes. Remove the ginger, and add that water into a tub already filled with hot water.

Colon Hydrotherapy

Colon hydrotherapy has shown excellent benefits for detoxification. Colon hydrotherapy irrigates the colon and removes waste from the body very safely and quickly similar to sweating and urination. For more information, please visit the International Association for Colon Hydrotherapy’s website at http://i-act.org/.

Hydrate with Water

I know you’ve heard this before – drink more water! There is a huge benefit in making sure your body is properly hydrated – just please don’t drink the unfiltered tap water.

Water helps detoxify the kidneys, helps to dilute toxins, and it is imperative to have enough water to transport nutrients in and waste out.

Adding lemon to your water is a great way to help stimulate bile and cleanse your kidneys.

Eat and Drink Your Greens!

Eating plenty of raw foods including greens and beets as well as blending your veggies into smoothies are extremely beneficial habits to put in place. Greens and high quality veggies supply your body with the antioxidants and nutrients it requires for eliminating toxins. Blending rather than juicing allows you to benefit from the fiber that is so important in your veggies. A clear, flavorless fiber supplement added to your blended drink can greatly increase your ability to clear toxins as well. Be advised, in order to properly breakdown vegetables into the most delicious smoothie consistency it is best to use a high-speed blender like a Blendtec or Vitamix.. For a less expensive option, check out the NutriBullet.

The purpose of these suggestions is to assist your liver and the channels of elimination function at their peak level to rid your body of toxic buildup.

In my next post look forward to N for Nourish as you continue cleansing inside and out with your RENEW Total Body Detox program!

Eliminate Hidden Toxins in Your Body – the Natural Way!

eliminate - happy liver - brendawatson.com

Step 2 of the RENEW Total Body Detox program is aimed at eliminating toxins that have accumulated inside your body for years. Eliminate represents the first “E” in RENEW.

Many people ask “How do I know I am toxic?” Here are some simple questions that might indicate the presence of toxins in your body.

  1. Have you experienced a gradual loss of energy to the point that you find yourself tired and worn out by the end of the day?
  2. Has you energy level over the years decreased to the point you have developed a new accepted level of low energy that you think is normal with age?
  3. Does you skin look unhealthy, pale or chaffy?
  4. Are you experiencing changes in your mood or even depression?
  5. Have you experienced weight gain for no apparent reason?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you are probably experiencing the effects of hidden toxins in your body.

Detoxification is a natural, ongoing process in the body. You are always naturally cleansing. By choosing an herbal detox program, we can enhance the body’s natural processes.

An herbal detox program could be the very solution you have been looking for in order to live your happiest and healthiest life.

The tradition of herbal cleansing has been recorded in the cultures of the ancient Sumerians, Egyptians, Romans, Greeks, Chinese, Europeans, and American and Asian Indians.

Unfortunately in the last 10 years many people believe they can cleanse by simply drinking a tea, shifting your food choices, or fasting. Even though it is important to clean up the diet while cleansing you need herbs and fiber to have a positive impact on your organs and create vibrant health.

I have seen miraculous health changes in people I have worked with when they choose a total body cleanse. It has changed their lives. My life absolutely changed from one of constant issues to consistently vibrant health when I focused on specific cleansing programs like the one I’ve laid out below.

The most effective detox programs use a combination of herbs that create:

  • Laxative effective to make sure the bowel is eliminating toxins that are leaving the organs.
  • Diuretic effects which increase urine flow.
  • Diaphoretic effects which induce sweating.
  • Blood purifying properties which assist in the removal of toxins from the body. Ultimately, purifying the blood is the most important aspect of detox, as the blood is the avenue which brings nutrients to all the cells, tissues and organs of the body.

Why Choose a Total Body Detox which combines herbs that affect the Channels of Elimination?

Your detox program should include a combination of herbs that will support your body’s channels of elimination (liver, colon, kidneys, blood, lymph, lungs, and skin and by means of several different mechanisms.

  • Liver – Herbs in the cleansing process will stimulate bile production in the liver, one of the most notable ways the liver rids the body of toxins. Once bile is stimulated by herbs, the toxins flow to the gallbladder and then the small intestine. Herbs also help prevent fat deposits in the liver. Note: fatty liver is the #1 liver problem people have today, especially if fat is present around the waist area of the body.
  • Colon – Herbs stimulate the colon to move waste along quickly. This will not cause too much elimination. It will just enhance it. By adding fiber into your detox program, once the gallbladder dumps the bile into the small intestine, soluble fiber absorbs the toxins and sends them out through the colon.
  • Kidneys – Herbs stimulate urine output. Many toxins leave through the urine, especially caffeine and nicotine.
  • Blood and lymph – Herbs stimulate circulation of blood and lymph which are both essential for cellular waste removal.
  • Lungs – Herbs promote discharge of mucus from the lungs which assists in the removal of airborne toxins.
  • Skin – Herbs promote healthy skin due to the cleansing of the bloodstream.

These benefits of Total Body Cleansing are why we all need a targeted herbal program for a specific time. Statistics show us the average person has close to 90 difference chemicals circulating in their bloodstream. That’s right, 90!

How do you pick a Total Body Cleansing program that is right for you?

I have worked with thousands of people who have detoxed their body with the type of herbal products I developed as a result of my decades of work.

Here’s a Cleanse For a First-Time Cleanser

If you have never taken an herbal cleansing formula, I recommend that you start with a Basic Total Body Cleanse. This is formulated with all the herbs you need for cleansing while providing gentle colon stimulation to assist your channels of elimination.

The formulation includes herbs which support liver health like artichoke, blessed thistle, dandelion, milk thistle, to name a few. Also included are herbs like mullein for the lungs, parsley for the kidneys, burdock for the skin.

For best results, this program should be taken for two weeks. It’s easy… 2 caps in the morning + 2 caps in the evening with a scoop of fiber. Done for the day!

For More Experienced/Constipated Cleanser

If you have cleansed on a regular basis or have a tendency toward constipation, are overweight, have skin problems, or lung congestion, consider a Total Body Herbal Cleanse that is more advanced and concentrated. You will cleanse for a longer period of time. I found 30 days is ideal for most people.

The Advanced Cleansing Program will have some of the same herbal combinations as the basic cleanse program but with a higher concentration of herbs.

When you look at the label on an Advanced Cleanse, in the morning formula you will see Extracts 4:1 or Extracts 5:1 instead of whole herbs. This means the herbs in this formula are more concentrated.

Once again, there are two formulas – one for the morning and another for the evening. The evening formula will also be stronger, meaning it will create more colon elimination. Many people require this, with more toxins leaving the body.

Begin Your Internal Detox Program Now.

Whether you’re a first-timer or an experienced cleanser, you can now choose a specific formula that is geared to eliminating silent toxins from your body. I’ve made this program easy to follow. Believe me, it will definitely fit into your busy lifestyle.

Is Your Body in Need of Spring Cleaning?

spring cleaning - brendawatson.com

There are few rites of Spring more satisfying than the annual spring clean. For most people, spring cleaning means putting away coats and warm clothes, raking the yard and dusting the house. But spring is also the perfect time for body cleansing and renewal.

Perhaps you have been dealing with chronic illness, low energy, or have noticed accelerated aging. Maybe you have been having trouble shedding unwanted pounds or you’ve experienced “brain fog”. Listen up here – it just may be the perfect time to choose a complete body detoxification program!

When you look around at the comforts of your life chances are you don’t easily recognize many of the things in your environment that harbor silent killers. Common household goods, countertops, furniture, clothing, garden hoses, bottled water – all contain hidden toxins. Even your favorite foods, ones you think are nourishing you, may in reality be poisoning you.

The good news! You can do something about it right now with help of my proven and effective body detox program. Let’s do some spring cleaning together!

When I began cleansing for my own health in the late 80’s, it was a labor intensive, time consuming, sometime unpleasant process of fasting and juicing that involved a lot of complexity. Not fun. Not easy.

My health had declined to the point where I was ready to do anything to get better (do you know the feeling?). So ultimately I buckled down and committed to those difficult programs, grasping at the hope of rediscovering health. This was after years of seeking the help of traditional medical doctors and finding no relief. I had suffered with chronic constipation, migraines and chronic fatigue, just to name a few miserable issues. Finally I began to get better and better through the studies I did and efforts I made to detoxify and cleanse my own body.

In the process, I realized that I was not the only person suffering and in need of detoxing. Over the my career I have been passionate about developing workable programs that can fit anyone’s lifestyle. Happily, today through my own experience and work with myriad clients, I have designed programs and products that are simple, easy and much more suited to the busy lifestyles we currently have.

Yes, it is true toxins do exist – and so do ways to combat them that are practical, clear and economical. I’m proud to offer you the RENEW program – a simple, easy-to-follow five week spring cleaning program that will rid toxins from your life.

RENEW. RENEW stands for:

Step 1 “R” stands for Reduce your exposure to toxins in your environment. I will be teaching you about your body’s natural detoxification processes. This will help you truly understand the ways in which you can support your body’s function.  Through 3 sequential actions,  you will see how reducing the the toxic load in your environment can be accomplished very easily.

Step 2 “E” stands for Eliminate toxins in your body that have been stored in your organs and fat deposits. This fact alone could be causing you weight gain and also many other chronic health problems. We will accomplish this process through a very specific herbal cleansing regimen that is effective, economical and easy to follow.

Step 3 “N” stands for Nourish your body with the proper nutrients. Together we can support your body in it’s continued efforts toward optimal self detoxification. As your organs function more efficiently, you will continue to replenish your cells long after you have finished the initial 5 weeks of detox. If you are having weight issues or experiencing inflammation in your body, we will help you create your own maintenance insurance plan.

Step 4 “E” stands for Energize through exercise and relaxation. These techniques are designed to further your body’s health maintenance. By strengthening the critical mind-body connection, you will be better equipped to manage the stresses in your life that may have contributed to your less-than-optimal health.

Step 5 “W” stands for Wellness is the ultimate achievement in the RENEW program. When I ask people what they would like to have in their life the number 1 answer is “I want to feel Wellness – physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually!”

I invite you to join me in the RENEW Spring Body Detox program. Follow me over the next five weeks as I post new articles every Sunday morning along with helpful detox tips that will make this a simple and effective program for you. You and your body will be glad you did!

See you next Sunday.

Choosing The Right Detox Program for You

Detoxification (detox), also know as cleansing, may conjure up images of people in sweat lodges dripping toxins from their bodies. Or maybe you think of people fasting for days to cleanse the impurities from their bodies. I want you to know, neither of these images are correct (or particularly user friendly!).   From a scientific perspective, detoxification refers to the body’s natural methods of self cleansing or ridding toxins that are being stored in various areas of the body.

The health benefits of detoxing are undisputed but the many commercial methods to achieve it are filled with myths, misunderstanding and ineffective and expensive treatments.

Today, there are detox foods, drinks, and detox diet plans. Advertisers would have you believe that you can achieve results by popping open a drink or eating some rare fruit that’s only found in Brazilian jungles! It’s no wonder that detoxing is a confusing subject to most people.

We need to detox detoxing ! Let me break it down for you.

I created a complete body cleaning program called the RENEW program. The program was developed over twenty years of research and testing. Some key features are:

  1. You start the detox process very slowly in order to reduce the “die off” reactions that people can experience when they try to cleanse too quickly. Does this sound familiar to you? Within the first days of over-zealous “detox shock” treatments, you may have become run-down, irritable, depressed, nauseous, or fixated on food. You may have also experienced headaches, diarrhea, or dizziness. Those unpleasant experiences may have been  enough to make you want to give up. Most of all, I don’t want that to be your experience!
  2. The RENEW program uses your body’s own natural detoxification processes to eliminate toxins such as cigarette residue, chemicals, heavy metals and environmental elements. Instead they can be converted to waste, which is then easily eliminated from the body. RENEW gently stimulates your body’s natural channels of elimination including the colon, lungs, skin, and kidneys. Ultimately the RENEW program supports the liver and lymphatic system which results in purifying the bloodstream.
  3. By targeting the bloodstream, the RENEW program replenishes the cells, tissues and organs of the body. Ultimately, the goal is to restore your blood so it becomes as pure as possible. This can only be achieved by a program that targets the total body like RENEW.

Follow me on this journey over the next five weeks as I detox detoxing. At the end of the program, I am confident you will feel better, have more energy and be healthier – from the inside out.

Waste Not, Want Not Provides Nobel Prize

I was thrilled to read about the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Medicine this year – Japanese biologist Yohinori Ohsumi. His research is based in thought processes after my own heart! He is explaining how our body’s cells deal with and recycle waste (as in detox!) and it seems this information is paving the way for treatments of many diseases down the line. Not surprising to me.

Dr. Ohsumi’s work is on a process you may not have heard about – autophagy. That literally means “self-eating” – and it helps us understand how cellular components are broken down and then recycled. Our cells do this constantly. See, recycling is not new – nothing is new under the sun.

And how exciting is this? Due to autophagy cells literally convert waste to energy and also building blocks for the renewal of other parts of cells. As always, our bodies are truly magnificent~

As reported in the Wall Street Journal, Dr. Ohsumi shared that his research area was important because cells couldn’t function without “quality control” and a way of repurposing what was no longer functional. We are learning that same lesson the hard way as we rush to find ways to revitalize our polluted oceans and waterways.

In the researcher’s own words – “Life is possible only with this extremely important recycling system. We create proteins and destroy them, and again create and destroy, and that’s what makes life exist.”

I have to say I truly admire Dr. Ohsumi’s extraordinarily humble attitude as well as his unswerving focus on this seemingly lowly biological process, rather than gearing his research toward chasing the almighty dollar.

Personally, I find it interesting that Dr. Ohsumi mentioned that he started his research in what people viewed as garbage collection, when other esteemed colleagues didn’t have much interest and couldn’t see the value in the study of degradation of proteins.

I feel a kinship with the Doctor. My work was started in colon hydrotherapy – yes, helping people to literally remove waste from their colons to achieve much better health. In fact, my first product was formulated specifically to help people to relieve themselves of parasites, along with pathogenic bacteria and yeast. Through the years, thousands have found this formula a very effective way to eliminate garbage from their bodies while freeing more energy for repair and regeneration. Like Dr. Ohsumi, when I started out, people really didn’t want to talk much about their poop, didn’t think it was important. Many still don’t.

Just a few years ago my assistant attended a scientific pediatric medical conference. A well know medical doctor delivered a presentation to M.D.s on managing parasitic infections. Only pharmacological options were offered. My assistant asked why there was no information shared about the herbal preparations that had been used not only by me but also by countless populations around the globe for eons. He answered that there hadn’t been any research done to prove the efficacy of such formulations.

How sad. Relief for so many people everywhere is restricted by the money-grubbing choices of controlling financial entities. Much research in the past has been targeted to prove what will bring the most money to the funding source. There’s not a lot of cash in researching black walnut hulls or wormwood unless some pharmaceutical company discovers how to butcher the original DNA to create a new substance they can then patent and monetize.

My prayers are that the studies of Dr. Ohsumi and many others like him are heralding a new era of research.  I believe it’s time we look into the true working of our bodies on a much deeper level. Let’s not be put off by “waste products” (as Dr. Ohsumi has shown are so important) or for that matter, “poop”! What may at first seem like garbage can provide us with critical information about essential processes that can support ongoing health and vitality for ourselves – and for our planet.

Toxic Heart, Toxic Body

As American Heart Month 2016 winds down, I’d like to shift my focus to an area that we don’t always associate with heart issues – toxins. Toxins are everywhere; there is no doubt about it. In the air we breathe, in the water we drink, in the food we eat, in our homes, in most products we use—even in the most pristine places on earth—toxins are there. Truth is, toxin accumulation can directly impact our cardiovascular system, and many times will manifest as high blood pressure, increased atherosclerosis, and ultimately heart issues.

Toxins are chemicals that interfere with normal functions in the body, and most have been associated with adverse health effects. At this point, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) regularly measure over 200 toxic compounds, tracking the levels in different aspects of our population. However there are 80,000 chemicals currently in use! Although the CDC adds new chemicals to track annually, it’s simple to see that we will never be able to really understand the full impact of the substances we’re all exposed to. The sad fact is many chemicals contribute to cardiovascular disease – either directly, or indirectly – through an increase in oxidative stress and general systemic inflammation.

So what is oxidative stress, also known as oxidation anyhow? It is one of the main drivers of inflammation in the body. Inflammation is at the root cause of heart disease, and for that matter, all other chronic disease as well.

Consider this analogy illustrating the destructive properties of oxidation: Oxidation is like a punch thrown from a bully (the oxidant), and it can easily lead to a full-blown fight if enough molecules get involved. Destruction results. Oxidation occurs when there are not enough antioxidants (the peacekeepers) around.

Oxidative stress triggers inflammation and regarding cardiovascular issues, it initiates the destruction of the lining of the blood vessels, called endothelial dysfunction.

Atherosclerosis involves endothelial dysfunction and chronic inflammation in the artery walls, progressing to the buildup of plaque and eventual cardiac complications such as heart attack and stroke. So I’m sure you can clearly see how toxins that increase oxidative stress are definitely the enemy. And antioxidants are our friends.

It is a myth that nothing can be done about toxin exposure. The fact of the matter is that supporting the body’s seven channels of elimination – colon, liver, lungs, lymph, kidneys, skin, and blood – through diet and cleansing will help improve the body’s natural detoxification abilities. A healthy eating plan and cleansing routine will fortify your heart right along with every other part of your body.

In addition to the antioxidants your body naturally produces, you also obtain antioxidants from your diet. A diet high in antioxidants includes plenty of deeply colored fruits and vegetables. This important step helps decrease oxidative stress and general systemic inflammation.

Regular exercise stimulates sweating and the release of toxins from your skin. Different herbal formulas help support the organs of elimination. Next month I plan to discuss cleansing in more detail.

In my book, Heart of Perfect Health, I offer information and targeted programs designed to protect your heart for the rest of your life. Toxins may be all around us, but we have ways to release them – and renew our health.

Summer Salad Treat

Filed in Adults, Cleansing & Detox, Digestive Health, Recipes | Posted by Brenda Watson on 08/07/2015

Is it summer enough for you yet? Here in Florida it’s either hot, or raining, or hot and humid from the recent rain. In the spirit of cooling off, I’m offering a recipe treat this week.

I seem to crave light foods almost exclusively – and easy prep is a must. So salads and more salads are appealing. Adding in bitter greens makes this combination especially valuable as a gentle cleanse for your liver.

And although watermelon is not a low sugar food, how can you go an entire summer without a little taste of the fruit that seems to represent summer itself?

It’s also a great season to find beautifully colored tomatoes that can really dress up this delicious mixture. Artistic vision meets simple nutritious delight!

Watermelon and Heirloom Tomato Salad with Yummy Roasted Nuts

1 cup mixture of walnuts, sunflower seeds and pumpkins seeds

¼ cup extra virgin olive oil

2 tbsp thinly sliced fresh basil

2 tbsp balsamic vinegar or coconut vinegar

1 garlic clove – pressed or minced

1 tsp raw honey

Pinch of salt and pepper to taste

2 cups of cubed watermelon

3 tomatoes, colors optional, cut in wedges

3 cups arugula

Place nuts on a roasting pan in the oven or toaster oven on ‘broil’ or ‘toast’ – just until you hear the pumpkin seeds pop – usually a little over 5 minutes, depending on your oven. Set them aside to cool.

For dressing, combine oil, basil, vinegar, garlic, honey, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly.

Place watermelon, tomatoes, arugula and dressing in a medium-sized bowl and toss together.

Garnish with roasted nuts.

Serves 2 to 3.

Happy Summer!

Blended Drink for Loving Your Liver

Filed in Adults, Cleansing & Detox, Diet, Dietary Fiber, Digestive Health, Liver, Recipes | Posted by Brenda Watson on 06/12/2015

Here comes the summer, and with it, the opportunity to sweat! Of course, when you’re in your business clothes, you may not perceive that as a positive. Maybe if you remember that sweating is one of the most important ways that your body eliminates toxins, it will lessen your dismay at possible perspiration stains on your blouse.

I’ve been writing a lot lately about loving your liver, and suggesting that from time to time you make an effort to cleanse. So I decided to share one of my favorite blended detox drinks here today – one that includes ingredients that will help promote optimal liver function.

2 ribs of celery

1 cup chopped green cabbage

1/3 lemon or lime

1 small beet

1 whole Granny Smith apple

A handful of spinach

And/or dandelion greens and/or arugula – these liver supportive greens tend to be more bitter, so add them depending on your “bitter tolerance”

Handful of ice cubes, if desired

Place ingredients in Ninja or Vitamix and blend until smooth.

You might even consider adding some flax, chia or soluble acacia fiber to your drink that will increase your fiber intake. During a liver detox as bile flow is stimulated from the liver to the gallbladder to the gut, it’s helpful to provide extra fiber to absorb those released toxins, preventing them from being reabsorbed back to the liver.

Make loving your liver a habit. Believe me, it’s one that will pay off in the long run.
