Almost everyone recovering from a heart attack, heart or stent surgery is prescribed Plavix. Its benefits in reducing blood clots and therefore further heart problems appear to be significant. However, it can irritate patient’s stomachs and so it has become common practice to almost automatically give Plavix patients a proton pump inhibitor such as Prilosec. In a study just published in the prestigious medical journal – JAMA, Dr. Michael Ho scrutinized 8,200 patient records and identified that the addition of Prilosec increased the risk of a return to hospital for heart problems during the next 18 months by 25%.
Leading Doctors including Dr. Steven Nissen of Cleveland Clinic, a candidate for the role of FDA Commissioner are now saying that there should be no automatic prescription of Prilosec with Plavix and that patients should seek alternative medications to solve their stomach problems.

Take this advice an important step further:
People on Plavix should look outside the aisles of drugstores that are overloaded with heartburn and stomach acid medications. Not only do these drugs now appear to increase heart risk, but they do not get to the root of the problem of heartburn and acid reflux. Instead, nature has provided us with real solutions in the forms of digestive enzymes. These enzymes are now available in health food stores and online, for example, at http://www.renewlife.com/category/enzymes.aspx
I think we need to start getting back toward the holistic health mindset (without all the ‘new age’ oddness behind it). New Age mainstream health practices — i.e., ones with doctors (MDs) either at the helm or in the boat.
It is just another case of the state of sickness medicine which is what is practiced today. Proton pump inhibitors are NEVER TO BE TAKEN LONG TERM Why? Let’s look at the basic physiology of the body which I’m sure all doctors learned in school. What these drugs do is inhibit the ability of the stomach to produce HCl (hydrochloric acid). Now this could this be in the long run detrimental to anyone’s health. So let’s look at what acid in the stomach does.
First it is your natural sterilizer for the bacteria on the food you eat. We all take in bacteria everyday on our food. HCl kills pathogenic bacteria that could cause food poisoning (70 million Americans get this yearly) or other bacteria problems such as H Pylori (which is cause of stomach ulcers. What this means is if you stop the production of acid your stomach’s abiiity to naturally sterilize the bacteria on the food you eat is NOT THERE. We take in millions of bacteria on our food daily. You have opened your body to all kinds of bacteria that could cause severe health problems once they leave the stomach and enter the intestines. Remember 70% of you immune system is in the gut.
Also in order to ABSORB key nutrients like B-12, calcium, zinc, and selenium you need acid in the stomach. Studies have now shown acid blocking medication is associated with osteoporosis.
HCl is also very important in the digestion of animal protein so without this undigested meat enters into the intestinal tract and if the enzymes are not enough from the pancreas to digest the meat then the meat becomes a toxin and can be part of a chain of reactions that causes other problems that are not associated back to digestion like estrogen that is secreted from the liver .Many of the conditions we develop that are not gastrointestinal problems we do not trace back as having their origin in the gut.
So the end result can be many different problems that people will develop that they do not associate with acid blocking medication could be conditions like:
Estrogen dominance(common in women today can cause fibrocystic breast)
B-12 deficiency (thinning hair, brittle fingernails)
Selenium deficiency (contributing to the liver not detoxing as well)
Calcium deficiency (osteoporosis)
This is just a snapshot of the myriad of problems that can come from the overuse of these kinds of medications. The inserts on the bottle say do not take more that 8-12 weeks.
It is a wonder some people can sleep at night. I am for Byron’s suggestion. More doctors with a holistic approach to helping the whole person. People who do what they have always done usually get what they’ve always gotten. Bad advice.
Wasn’t there a study that came out semi-recently linking PPIs to increased risk for hip fractures in women aged 55 and older?
That makes so much sense when looking at all that HCl does for the absorption of vitamins and minerals.
Unfortunately, this is an example of what we’re dealing with across the country. My sister and brother pop these pills and antacids like Skittles. And recently, when my sister caught a stomach bug, she vomited up a meal and was shocked to see an UNDIGESTED Chicken McNugget chunk that had been sitting around for more than three days. Not eating McNuggets? Well, not eating them goes without saying, but the fact that a hunk of the stuff had been stuck in her gut was startling.

I suppose we can thank the drug companies and the doctors who sit in their pockets…
