The critical role of dietary fiber continues to grow within the scientific community. Fiber is a complex carbohydrate found only in plants. Our body can’t digest it and it doesn’t contain any calories. So why is it so important and why do we need so much of it?
Most Americans only get 10-12 grams of daily fiber on average. We need much more! There are two types of fiber - soluble and insoluble - and each plays an important role. Insoluble fiber hurries along digestion and adds bulk to stools. It’s the roughage our elders have always told us about. Soluble fiber attracts water into the bowel and slows digestion.
